HBO Max Orders New Scooby Doo Velma Series, Revives Clone High

HBO Max has announced series orders for three new adult animated shows, including a Scooby-Doo spinoff focusing on the origin story of Velma Dinkley, a revival of Clone High and a brand new IP titled Fired On Mars.

Velma

Velma is described as “the origin story of Velma Dinkley, the unsung and underappreciated brains of the Scooby-Doo Mystery Inc. gang” and that the show is “an original and humorous spin that unmasks the complex and colourful past of one of America’s most beloved mystery solvers” (via Collider).

The titular Velma Dinkley will be voiced by Mindy Kaling of The Office fame, who will also act as one of the show’s executive producers alongside Charlie Grandy, Howard Klein, and Sam Register. The first season will contain 10 episodes 10-episode series and produced by Warner Bros. Animation.

Clone High Revival

HBO Max ordered two new seasons of Clone High. The animated series from Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Bill Lawrence originally ran for only a single in 2002 but became a cult classic. It was essentially a parody of typical high school dramas, but one set at a school for the clones of historical figures like Cleopatra and Gandhi. Lord, Miller, and Lawrence will be back to serve as executive producers on “modern refresh”, with Erica Rivinoja acting as showrunner.

Fired On Mars

Last but not least, there’s Nate Sherman and Nick Vokey’s Fired on Mars; an existential workplace comedy set on the Martian campus of a modern tech company. HBO Max also renewed JG Quintel’s Close Enough for two more seasons.

HBO Max’s EVP of Original Comedy and Adult Animation Suzanna Makkos said (via IGN):

“It is a tremendous privilege to build on the 100 year-plus legacy of ‘cartoons’ at this company.

We can draw a straight line from our hundreds of childhood hours spent watching Bugs outwit Elmer to the current slate of adult animated projects we are building here at HBO Max and we think fans will agree.

We are proud to introduce this distinctive group of series from a wide range of diverse creators that will form a first stop destination for animation lovers everywhere.”

These new projects will come hot on the heels of HBO Max’s Harley Quinn, which proves that adult animation can be some of the TV in recent times. We named it one of the best TV shows of 2020, and it’s already renewed for Season 3.
