This Could Have Been Our DCEU Darkseid

The 2017 Justice League movie remains a hotly-debated topic of discussion amongst fans of comics and Zack Snyder, as the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement continues to pick up steam two years after the movie’s initial release.

Many fans are still awaiting the complete version of Snyder’s vision, instead of the messy and ultimately uneven final product by Joss Whedon. While Warner Bros have stayed silent on the matter, Snyder himself claims that the Justice League Snyder Cut exists, and to prove that fact, he has released an image from the scene of what would have been his version of the movie.

The image depicts a young Darkseid in the middle of using the Anti-Life Equation in a flashback sequence from the Justice League Snyder Cut. Before he went by the name Darkseid, the Lord of Apokolips was known as the New God Uxas, hence Snyder’s choice of including the hashtag #UxasAndTheAntiLife.

Darkseid Justice League Snyder

According to Snyder (via ScreenRant), the flashback sequence featuring young Darkseid would have triggered when Wonder Woman stumbled upon a mural. This particular scene was omitted from Whedon’s final cut.

It would’ve been great to witness Darkseid’s larger role as seen in Justice League Snyder Cut. Perhaps Snyder’s version of Darkseid could have been to the DCEU what Thanos became for the MCU, but it’s all in the past now. Warner Bros is currently charting a different path for the DCEU.

Why Does Darkseid Look Like Thanos?

Darkseid Thanos

Since we’re already discussing Darkseid, I’m sure some of you might be wondering why Darkseid looks so much like Thanos and vice versa. They’re both purple with the same rocky evil-looking faces with bulky bodies. The truth is, Darkseid came first, and that Thanos is the copycat.

Darkseid was created by the late legendary Jack Kirby in 1970, first appearing in issue 134 of Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen in November 1970. Thanos made his debut three years later in the pages of the Invincible Iron Man issue 55.

Thanos creator Jim Starlin has long since admitted that the now-popular Marvel villain is actually based on Darkseid. He was told to do so by then Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas. The rest, as they say, is history.

It’s certainly ironic that Thanos is now more well-known than Darkseid, but it’s not the first time that’s happened to similar comic book characters. For example, Marvel’s Deadpool was meant to be a parody of DC’s Deathstroke, but the ripoff is now more popular than the original.

Well, here’s hoping that Warner Bros does actually release the Justice League Snyder Cut one day. I actually liked the Justice League movie, despite its flaws and issues (check out my review here).
