Harmonix Reveals A Promising Music-Mixing Game For 2020

Harmonix, the same folks who brought you the good parts of Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and the old-school Amplitude, have announced its latest music project Fuser.

Fuser is a DJ simulation where you build song mashups on the fly that may end up magical and not cacophonous. You have four turntables across the bottom of the screen. They’re colour-coded and tied to different instruments and vocals. All songs in Fuser is split out into the same four components, meaning you can mix and match whatever you want.

You can take drums from one song and then add vocals from another, while topping it off with synths and guitars from two other songs. Yes, you can have the vocals of Smash Mouth’s “All Star” while playing the drums of The Clash’s “Rock The Casbah” while mixing it with Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper”. And somehow it will come out sounding pretty awesome thanks to Harmonix’s method called beatmatching.

If you’ve played Harmonix’s DropMix, it’s essentially that game, but without the cards and the tabletop stuff that made the game convoluted and obscure.

Think of this as the next step in Beatmania and DJ Max, except you don’t hit or scratch notation charts. You are creating your own flow and beat. So where’s the challenge? You can earn more points in-game by changing up your tracks occasionally within a 3-minute frame. Keep a track on for too long, and you’ll lose points and the crowd will boo you. You can also earn points by completing on-the-fly requests, like using more 90s songs or playing more rock music, or dropping discs on the downbeat.

Or you could just freestyle it. Harmonix are balancing between creating a skill-based video game and an open-ended gaming experience. With 100 songs to play around with, it’ll take a while until you get bored with Fuser. Below is a chunk of the playlist:

Fuser will be out in 2020 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
