Rainbow Six Siege is Going Regional with its Esports Program

I’m no esports aficionado, but Ubisoft’s plans for Rainbow Six Siege’s esports program sound rather interesting. The company revealed recently that after the Pro League Season XI Finals in Sao Paulo this May 16 and 17, it will adopt a regional structure for its multiplayer shooter’s esports scene beginning mid-June.

Under the new structure, each region will have control over the details of their respective program, such as their format or how they “fuel the global program”. There will be four regional programs – Europe, North America, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific – running in parallel to each other.

Each competitive year, or “Season”, will be divided into four quarters. The first three quarters are “Stages” that conclude with a Major, which features the four best teams from each region competing against each other. The fourth quarter is reserved for the regional finals and relegations, and it leads up to the Six Invitational that will decide who’s the best Rainbow Six Siege team at the end of the Season.

According to Ubisoft, this shift allows them to “enhance the specificities and successes of each region” and provide “a stronger focus on local particularities and an increased diversity in the different choices of esports programs”.

The Asia-Pacific region will group the Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian programs into the North Division. The South Division, on the other hand, contains the vague promise of “exciting new opportunities to the established Oceanic market along with up-and-coming regions such as South Asia”. ESL AJP is in charge of the region’s leagues and events.

Ubisoft also revealed that the regional programs’ teams will be rewarded for “sustained performance” with the new point system. Less surprisingly, their performance in these programs and Majors will affect their global rankings and efforts towards reaching the Six Invitational.

You can get the full details on the new regional program and non-Asia Pacific regions on Ubisoft’s website here.
